In any other year, a love team born during a global pandemic — debuting on a network that had just lost its broadcast franchise — would have been a quiet footnote in Pinoy showbiz history. But DonBelle was never going to be a footnote. Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano arrived at the exact moment ABS-CBN needed a reason to believe in its own future, and they delivered on every bet the network placed on them.

Their story is one of the most unlikely success stories in the history of Philippine entertainment. Announced in November 2019, their first project was halted by COVID-19 before a single episode aired. The network that cast them lost its free TV broadcast license in May 2020. And yet — through iWantTFC, streaming platforms, sheer chemistry, and the unstoppable force of Filipino fandom — DonBelle became the love team of their generation.

“We’re very happy that they gave us the trust. I know it’s hard also to invest in something that you’re not sure of.” — Donny Pangilinan, on ABS-CBN’s faith in DonBelle during their network’s most difficult chapter.

This is the complete story: from the moment their names appeared together on a casting announcement, to their first Netflix trending film, to their debut primetime teleserye, and beyond — the making of ABS-CBN’s new royal couple.

The Announcement That Started Everything
ABS-CBN officially confirmed that Donny Pangilinan and Belle Mariano would headline He’s Into Her — an adaptation of Maxinejiji’s beloved Wattpad novel. Few outside the fandom noticed. Nobody predicted what was coming. Production began in early 2020 and was immediately suspended when community quarantine halted the entire country.

He’s Into Her Premieres — And Takes Off
Despite ABS-CBN having lost its free TV franchise the year before, He’s Into Her premiered on iWantTFC and A2Z Channel 11 — and immediately trended on social media every single week. The show ranked consistently as iWantTFC’s most-watched series, earned a nomination at the Venice TV Award, and won Best Original Program at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2021. A love team was officially born — and fans christened themselves the Bubblies.

Their First Film Hits Netflix — And Trends at #1
Love Is Color Blind, directed by John Leo Garcia, became DonBelle’s first Star Cinema film and premiered on KTX.ph and Smart GigaPlay. When it landed on Netflix shortly after, it immediately topped the streaming platform’s trending list in the Philippines. Belle even contributed the soundtrack — For Your Eyes Only — marking her as a genuine dual threat as actress and singer.

He’s Into Her Season 2 — The Fandom Grows
The second season premiered to even larger online engagement. Belle headlined her own digital concert, Daylight: A Belle Mariano Digital Concert, which sold over ₱300,000 in tickets in just two minutes from the start of ticket sales — with Donny appearing as a guest performer. The DonBelle brand had fully crossed over from love team into a cultural force with commercial weight.

An Inconvenient Love — The Mature Turn

Can’t Buy Me Love — Primetime Royalty Confirmed
The moment the Bubblies had been waiting for: DonBelle’s first-ever primetime teleserye, directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar and aired on Kapamilya Channel. Bingo and Caroline’s story ran for 150 episodes across two seasons, debuted on Netflix three days before its Philippine TV premiere, and aired to ratings as high as 9.2% in its opening week. Belle played Caroline, a wealthy Chinese-Filipino heiress; Donny played Bingo, a street-smart Binondo boy with a heart of gold. It was their longest, most demanding project — and their finest work together.

New Series on Viu — The Empire Continues

“‘Yung teleserye, ibang usapan ‘yan kumpara sa He’s Into Her. Talagang we live and breathe our characters. At times nakakalimutan namin may Donny pa rin.”

Why DonBelle Works

Not every pair of attractive young actors becomes a love team that matters. The Pinoy entertainment industry has launched hundreds of pairings that generated initial buzz and quietly faded before their second project. What makes DonBelle different — what makes them last — comes down to a few essential ingredients that are rarer than they look.

The first is adversity origin. DonBelle didn’t arrive on a silver platter. They debuted during COVID-19, on a network that had just lost its broadcast license, with their first series airing on a streaming platform that most Filipinos were still figuring out. Every milestone they achieved, they achieved from the bottom up — and Filipino audiences reward that kind of story instinctively. We love underdogs who win. DonBelle is the ultimate underdog love team story.

The second is genuine warmth between them. Both Donny and Belle have spoken repeatedly about how natural their dynamic feels off-camera. They were born in the same hospital — St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. They share the same taste in music (both are avowed Ben&Ben fans). Their birthdays are both on the 10th of the month. These small coincidences are the kind of detail that Filipino fans weave into mythology — and DonBelle’s mythology is particularly rich.

The third is individual talent that holds up under scrutiny. Belle Mariano is not simply a love team actress — she is a legitimately gifted singer whose solo concerts sell out in minutes, whose music streams in the tens of millions. Donny Pangilinan brings a grounded, emotionally intelligent quality to his roles that elevates every character he plays above the matinee idol stereotype. Together they are better than the sum of their parts. But apart, they are each formidable.

Year the DonBelle pairing was first announced by ABS-CBN

What ABS-CBN invested in DonBelle was not just a casting decision. It was a statement about the network’s future during its darkest chapter. In 2021, with no free TV license and a pandemic shutting down production pipelines, the network bet its digital future on two young actors whose chemistry it had only glimpsed in pre-production. That bet paid off in ways that went beyond ratings and streaming numbers. DonBelle gave the Kapamilya audience something to look forward to — and in 2021, that was worth more than any prime time slot.

✦ The Verdict

DonBelle is not the biggest love team in Philippine showbiz history — KathNiel and AlDub carry records that will be difficult to surpass for decades. But they may be the most important love team of the post-ABS-CBN-shutdown era: proof that the network could rebuild its youth audience from streaming up, that Wattpad stories carry cultural weight, and that the Filipino appetite for kilig is bottomless and pandemic-proof. They are the royal couple of a new ABS-CBN — and their story is very far from finished.
